The Oakmont patricians would not have sat around in the grill room and pencilled in JJ Spaun as their preferred winner of a US Open on their infamously punishing Pittsburgh track.
In truth, they should be pleased the course that founder William Fownes designed to weed out the clumsy, the spineless and the alibi artists successfully identified the toughest of the tough.
